Wareki to Seireki Converter

Convert Japanese era dates (和暦) to Gregorian years (西暦) and back — with exact era boundary days and gannen (元年) first-year support.

Wareki to Gregorian (和暦 → 西暦)

Gregorian to Wareki (西暦 → 和暦)

How it works

  1. Wareki to Gregorian: pick the era, enter the year — "gannen" or 元年 works for the first year — and get the Gregorian year plus its exact date range.
  2. Gregorian to Wareki: pick any date from 1868-01-25 onward and get the era, year and Japanese era name (令和, 平成, 昭和, 大正, 明治).
  3. Boundary days are exact: 1989-01-07 is Showa 64, and 1989-01-08 is Heisei 1.

FAQ

What is gannen (元年)?

The first year of a Japanese era is traditionally called gannen ("first year") rather than "year 1". This tool accepts "gannen", 元年, or 1 — they all mean the same.

Why does Showa 64 last only 7 days?

Emperor Hirohito died on 1989-01-07, so Showa 64 ran from January 1 to January 7, 1989. The very next day, 1989-01-08, began Heisei 1. The tool handles these short years exactly.

Which eras are covered?

Meiji 明治 (1868-01-25 to 1912-07-29), Taisho 大正 (1912-07-30 to 1926-12-24), Showa 昭和 (1926-12-25 to 1989-01-07), Heisei 平成 (1989-01-08 to 2019-04-30), and Reiwa 令和 (2019-05-01 to present).
