Every EU member state sets its own VAT rates, and the standard rates span from 17% (Luxembourg, the lowest) up to 27% (Hungary, the highest). Well-known examples: Germany 19%, France 20%, Italy 22%, Spain and the Netherlands 21%, Ireland 23%. Many countries also apply reduced rates to food, books, or medicines.
The two calculations you actually need are simple. To add VAT, multiply the net price by (1 + rate) — a €100 net item at 20% VAT is €120. To strip VAT from a gross price, divide by (1 + rate) — a €120 gross price at 20% means €100 net and €20 VAT. The calculator does both, so you never do the arithmetic by hand.

FAQ
Why do EU VAT rates differ by country?
EU law sets only a minimum standard rate (15%), and each member state chooses its own rates above that, plus reduced rates for certain goods. That is why a 27% rate in Hungary and a 17% rate in Luxembourg coexist.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by (1 + rate). At 20% VAT: €120 ÷ 1.2 = €100 net, so the VAT component is €20. Choose "remove VAT" mode in the calculator and it does this for you.
What is the highest EU VAT rate?
Hungary's 27% is the highest standard rate in the EU; Luxembourg's 17% is the lowest. Reduced rates for food, books, or medicine are typically much lower in most countries.
